Military Ethics - 1692 Words

Military Ethics PHI208: Ethics and Moral Reasoning Prof Whitney Easton 10 March, 2014 Military Ethics This paper will discuss the topic of military ethics using the utilitarian theory. It will also incorporate the ethical system of virtue ethics. â€Å"Military ethics is about our learning what is good and true and then having the courage to do and be what and who we ought to. For military ethics is not about his or her successes or failures; it is not about their virtues or vices. Military ethics is about our heritage and history, and it is about our responsibility to be men and women of character.† (Toner, 2003) Strong military ethics are vital to maintaining disciplined service members, to providing a clear moral compass to†¦show more content†¦Utilitarianism is also known to be a consequentialist theory. Military ethics are very in line with this kind of theory and logical thinking. The military expects its members to not only respect themselves but to also respect others, not just those with whom they serve, but to the civilian population as well. Military ser vice members, who decide to not follow the ethics, are subject to the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and their actions can be punished by law under the UCMJ. This is where virtue ethics could easily be associated with military ethics, in a sense that virtue ethics focuses mostly on the persons character, if an individual in the military is lacking the right set of characteristics to maintain professionalism, integrity and moral courage, then their actions will be judged and tried in accordance with the military justice system. Granted, the military justice system is focusing on the act of which the service member did, but if they also focus on the behaviors of the individual and know their character, then they can come to a more informed decision, rather than making a decision based solely off of the action and not the individuals character. Additionally, within the virtue ethics there are some virtues that philosopher Aristotle described as being a bit more complex. Those virtues are temperance and magnanimity. Essay on The Three Elements of the Female Athlete Triad

The Three Elements of the Female Athlete Triad For an increasing number of women in the United States, a concern or preoccupation with body weight and size is a constant pressure. Female athletes, like most women in our society, are also often pressured to conform to certain ideal body sizes and shapes, as dictated by the entertainment and fashion industries. Female athletes, however, face a twofold pressure. They face the burden that our culture places on all women to be thin, but they also face the burden from coaches, parents, and other athletes to succeed in sports and look good doing so by maintaining an unrealistically low weight. When weight gain means removal from a team or elimination from competition, many female athletes turn†¦show more content†¦This term refers to a wide range of abnormal behaviors, the extremes of which are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, but also includes limiting caloric intake, skipping meals, using diet pills, and many other pathogenic weight control behaviors. Studies report that the rate of disordered eating among female athletes may be as high as 62% in certain sports (Yeager, Agostini, Nattiv, and Drinkwater, 1993). While a study of college female swimmers found 15.4% were affected, a study of college gymnasts showed that 62% of collegiate female athletes had seriously abnormal eating patterns. Smith (1996) found that disordered eating is most common among those in appearance sports, such as gymnastics, ballet, figure skating, equestrian sports, and diving. However, disordered eating behavior can be seen in other sports in which appearance is not as important, such as tennis, swimming, and running. Skolnick (1993) also notes that another study of 182 female athletes, who participated in a variety of college sports, found that 32% showed disordered eating patterns. For example, meeting or engaging in competitive sports is stressor but if it is taken as a eustress, it may motivate to win. 2.An endocrinologist named Selye (1976) developed a theory called general Adaptation Syndrome (G.A.S). This theory was the first that attempt to discuss the physiological response to stress. It was very influencing in the earlier stress research. It also alerted the medical field about the connexion between stress and disease. However there are many issues in this theory. Firstly the absence of psychological factors: Selye believe that the physiological responses to the stressors are very similar. The Effects Of Video Game Play On The Educational Process

Video game play can be very beneficial in the educational process. It can enhance cognitive abilities and skills in children and adolescents. In fact, studies have found that improvements in cognition have been related to grey matter changes in the prefrontal cortex. Specifically, a study conducted by Simon Kuhn, in which magnetic resonance imaging scans of 152 14-year old adolescents were collected and used to estimate cortical thickness, showed an increase in cortical thickness in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and in correlation an increase in cognitive and strategic planning abilities (Simon Kuhn 5). These results come from the need to follow directions in games. In order to progress in games, one must first learn to follow the guidelines, restrictions and components of them. The Declaration Of Sentiments And Resolutions - 1107 Words

Feminism in the United States: The Declaration of Sentiments Kyron Brown History 2010 – W9 Professor Pennig November 26, 2014 Introduction In the year 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton conveyed to the audience of the Seneca Falls Convention the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions . The Declaration of Sentiments was written with the purpose of demanding civil freedom for women and of righting the wrongs of society. The Declaration included events where women’s rights were being oppressed and violated and where laws were giving special treatment to men. It also included the resolutions they demanded on these particular cases. In addition, the Declaration was written due to the fact that women in all parts of the globe were being oppressed for many years. The women in many countries, just like in the United States of America, were given a limited set of rights in the society compared to their male counterparts. One great example of this was the women’s suffrage in the United States, which was not inherently given to them until its national enactment in the year 1920. Analysis The document was specifically written for women and the events that revolved around their poor conditions in the past. It was also evident that one of its objectives was to promote and endorse feminism. This was due to the fact that women in America were being oppressed up until the mid-20th century. As Martha C. The essay also tells about the solutions with the aid of which the environment can regain a sustainable growth for electricity. Electricity is an innovation which is now mandatory for people to use, without which no livelihood is possible in today's era, so it is the responsibility for the community to adequ ately make use of electricity to initiate long growth (Zhou, et. al., 2016). Electricity is major aspect with the help of which all corporates and household chores work, so this shall be known that if there is no electricity for the future consumption then it can become a major issue due to which many innovations and other activities can stop. So if a country wants to grow and gain success then they need to attain adequate electricity and use to wisely so that it is saved for the future generation as well (Bengtsson, Rachlew, Wagner, 2016). Further, the key challenges faced in energy consumption are discussed below. Firstly, the major issue faced by countries nowadays regarding the consumption of energy in their use is that there is more access to electricity in the urban areas, whereas rural area people are barred with the use of such energy. This shows that there is an inadequate distribution of energy in the different parts of the country. People on whom, a restriction shall be imposed on the consumption of electricity are using it without any limit, and people shall come forward to innovative technology and shall be given electricity to the optimum level are restricted from such energy resources (Bhattacharya, et. al., 2016). Another key issue due to which the main problem of energy sustainability has occurred is the exploitation of natural resources, not talking specifically about the electricity consumption but the use of natural resources overall. People do not understand the need of the era to save the natural resources otherwise the future growth is impossible. So, another issue is that people exploit the electricity and over consumes it (Khan, Arsalan, 2016). Further, talking about the electricity sustainability in the environmental context, it shall be noted that energy is the aspect which is used on daily basis people to initiate their day to day activities, so consumption of electricity cannot be stopped on any conditions, but the issue related to the environment is that there is lack of energy resources in the environment, and more people using the electricity. Summarizing it shall be noted that there is more demand for electricity and less supply of electricity in the environment. Due to which non-renewable resources are getting depleted, and once if they are ended then it cannot be renewed through any other resources nor can it be replaced (Garba, Kishk, Moore, 2017). The social issue related to the electricity sustainability is that now days the focus of people is shifting from sustainability. This can be understood in such a way that during the festive time people believe in showing their status by making use of more and better resources than required. So, instead of using single light they make use of more lights for exposure and glow due to which electricity is majorly wasted. If a single person makes use of such electricity in this way then it is okay but now more people overuse the non-renewable electricity and forget about the sustainability of the environment (Abushnaf, Rassau, Grnisiewicz, 2016). Apart from that, for the purpose of innovation as well more and more nonrenewable resources are used by the society on a whole. For instance, talking about railways and transportation, starting from the use of trains which used to work on coal and petroleum, now the transportation has shifted to electric cars and train. Due to which more electricity is consumed than earlier. Resulting to which although innovation provides support to the people it also somehow increases the use of non-renewable resources like electricity in the environment. Also, use to excessive use of electricity, the environment is changing its normal state as electricity generates radiations which can adversely affect the health of people and nature as well (Canfield, Bruine de Bruin, Wong-Parodi, 2017). Also with increased technology, the fact has been known that everything is shifting to use of electronic consumer goods like, mobile phones, laptops etc. due to which more power is needed by people to charge these appliances, thus it shall be regarded as economic issues to the sustainable use of electricity. People are using electricity more than they are allotted, which means that consumption of per capital electricity is more than the standard due to which the natural resources are depleting. Also, the alternatives innovated to replace the electricity cannot adequately fulfill the requirement of people and they cannot even fully replace this natural resource. Thus, it is a major issue attracted with the country and its growth. There are many ways in which sustainability can be initiated by the country and its people. Also, people shall think of sustainability then only the target of sustainable future can be achieved. The major threat to sustainability is that if this process is not executed by people than the world might not see the future as well, because the environment, people, and their working cannot work effectively without sustainable energy resources. Thus, responses to the issue shall be innovated and executed to reduce the problem (Fox, Ray, 2016). The initial step shall be taken on the part of government that is, they shall set a standard limit for consumption of electricity by household and corporates. Consumption of energy more than this standard limit shall attract heavy penalties for people. This will initiate them to adequately sue such resources so that they do not need to pay more money to the government. Also, they shall impose taxes on the use of electricity; this will also reduce the use of electricity by people. Also, they shall initiate strategic plan which shall involve the use of renewable resources which shall assist the use of electricity consumption by people. Also, the plan shall spread awareness among people regarding electricity sustainability issues and ways to create sustainability (Strantzali, Aravossis, Livanos, 2017). The environment shall also be adequately taken care because excessive use of energy depletes the state of nature as electricity radiate gas and rays which negatively affect the state of nature. The best way in which consumption of electricity can be reduced is by circulating efficient use of electricity and the future condition without electricity. Power grid structure shall be defined which provide high-quality power demand of modern industries. Smart power grid system will introduce effective integration of various which shall replace the use of electricity in activities, proper distribution of power sources, effective electricity management as well (Gaspari, et. al., 2017). A committee shall be introduced with shall govern the rules related to sustainable electricity use and initiate awareness regarding the state of future without initiate electricity. The committee shall provide ways to the people with which they shall substitute the consumption of electricity in their day to day activities. Lastly, innovative alternatives shall be defined which shall reduce the dependence of people on electricity (Arawomo, 2017). Like, electricity shall be created with renewable resources such as solar energy, hydroelectricity etc. Thus, in the limelight of above-mentioned events, the fact that shall be noticed is that sustainable use of electricity is the need of the current era, otherwise extinction of electricity is also possible. Thus, people shall understand shall get acknowledge with this issue. They shall adequately make use of such resources then only sustainability is possible because society only makes use of electricity it is in their hand that how they initiate sustainability in the environment. Also, the government of the country shall also take adequate measures to educate people regarding sustainable use of electricity also people shall initiate the same in their working as well. The Things They Carried by Tim O Brian free essay sample

In Module one we answered several questions about particular chapters but one of the chapters that probably hit me the hardest was â€Å"How to Tell A True War Story† (O’Brien, 74-76). In this portion of the story Rat Kiley and Kurt Lemon are two friends who were playing catch in the hopes to get some quick smiles and laughs in the middle of all this turmoil called Vietnam. Curt wasn’t paying attention to where he was walking and he stepped on a booby-trapped 105 round. He was dead instantly. In Rat Kiley’s anger he picked this harmless animal to mutilate senselessly. It was a senseless act because slaughtering this buffalo wasn’t going to bring back his friend. â€Å"A true war story, if truly told, makes the stomach believe†. It did just that reading the detailed account of how Rat shot this animal piece by piece in his anger. How we as humans can seem too strong and tough but when we love we love hard and all rational goes out the window. We also discussed in module one about â€Å"On The Rainy River† (O’Brien 37-58). How Tim had to make a decision on whether or not he was going to serve in this war because he received a draft notice. During the 1960’s a draft meant you had no choice you were mandated to participate whether you wanted to or not. He wanted to go to Canada to hide our assignment was to decide whether or not we would have done the same. Everyone fears the unknown it is a natural occurrence but it happen even more so when you know the unknown might cost you your life.It is already known that â€Å"War is hell† (O’Brien, 74). But now he had to decide between his family and his country or his life. The chances of him returning home in one piece were slim. â€Å"All of us, I suppose, like to believe that in a moral emergency we will behave like the heroes of our youth, bravely, forthrightly, without thought of personal loss or discredit† (O’Brien, 37). But reality is no one wants to die especially when you don’t believe in the cause. The end result, the true reason I believe he decided to go was because of his fear. The fear he had to fail his family and friends that would feel the shame because of his actions. It was the fear of the consequences for not going. He called himself a coward because he didn’t flee. I was under the impression we was brave because he was able to face death in order to please his family and friends. That’s when I realized that this book told a story of how someone felt how they look at the world through their own eyes.It made me realize that everyone’s philosophy could be completely different depending on how we perceive the world. My cousin and I come from the same neighborhood, the same schools, the same culture but I always seek knowledge out and she wishes for nothing more than food, music and television to entertain her days. She finds humor in other people’s failures and critiques people harshly but doesn’t look at her own mistakes. She will find excuses for her failures by passing the blame on others.I wonder why did we come out so different when we come from the same place and our parents are very similar. But in some ways I find her courageous because she behaves this way in public and in private she doesn’t pretend to be something she is not and she is proud of herself no matter what anyone thinks. I think Tim would say my cousin is brave because she was able to do what she wanted to do regardless of what others think. I think if cousin would have been placed in that position she would have went to Canada.
